Case Introduction

This project is a large-scale, high-priority initiative in the aromatics industry, with its unit capacity and tower diameter ranking among the world’s largest. For the core unit—the aromatics extractive distillation column (with a 10,800 mm diameter)—the conventional floating-valve tray design long employed in the process package failed to achieve the expected performance during actual operation. In March 2025, the owner was faced with an extremely tight one-month turnaround window, requiring completion of the entire scope of work—from design and fabrication to installation. Changsha Boneng rose to the challenge by introducing a major technological innovation: it replaced the original floating-valve trays with its independently developed high-throughput, high-efficiency BV-T fixed-valve trays. Following the retrofit, the unit’s performance improved markedly: key operating metrics were comprehensively optimized, energy consumption decreased by approximately 10% year-on-year, and annual steam-cost savings are projected to exceed RMB 30 million. This retrofit provides an innovative solution to the longstanding operational-efficiency challenges plaguing similar units, marking a significant breakthrough for Chinese tower internals manufacturers in the optimization of high-end process packages and offering a new pathway for the technological upgrading of aromatics units worldwide.
